CALLING ALL ARTISTS! Art & About is gearing up for Chairs for Charity. We are open for business to collect your tastefully and artfully decorated chairs. Decorate a chair in any tasteful family friendly way and donate it for a great cause.

The 3rd Bi-Annual Chairs for Charity auction hosted by Art & About. All proceeds go toward benefiting arts in the community, 50% goes to a student/s from Manitowoc County who are furthering their art education in the form of scholarships through the Rahr -West Museum, 25% goes to the Rahr -West and 25% goes back to art and about so we can do community art projects, host art tours and continue to do Chairs for Charity.

The auction will be held Saturday, November 12, 2011 at the Rahr-West Art Museum located at 610 N 8th. Street in Manitowoc.

Member Holiday Party

In place of our usual monthly meeting there will be a Member Holiday Party...December 8th at 6:00 at Stumpjack in Two Rivers. This will be a super casual gathering for us to enjoy each other's company. The group will provide some food but feel free to bring a tasty treat to share if you would like. We will also be doing a gift exchange. If you choose to participate, just bring a gift or 2 or 3 or whatever you want...if you bring one - you get one, it's a give=get situation :) We suggest that the gift either be made by you or somehow art-related. The suggested value is $10-15, but the value isn't really all that important...it's really just for the fun of it all!

TANNENBAUM FESTIVAL TREE

HOORAY!!! to the Tannenbaum Festival Tree Committee- Randy Bolt, and Becky and Theresa Paral...as well as the others who assisted in the making of ornaments for the whimsical wonder that is the Art & About Dr Seuss
tree!!!!

The tree is on display at the Best Western Lakefront Hotel, 101 Maritime Drive, Manitowoc, WI from now until this Saturday Nov. 13, when it will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to our local Lakeshore Community Action Program (CAP). An all day charitable event with beautifully decorated holiday trees and wreathes, silent auction, door prizes, raffles, and holiday photo sessions. And in the evening meet Tom Zalaski of WFRV TV Green Bay!.

The team of busy ornament makers did an amazing job and the tree looks fantastic!!! Be sure to
stop by and check it out before the auction if you don't plan to attend.

Empty Bowls Fundraiser Event

The Two Rivers Optimist Club held its' "Empty Bowls" event on Oct. 10, with the funds raised going to the Two Rivers Mishicot Ecumenical Pantry. Some Art and About members joined in to make a soup bowl to be donated to the event.
The Empty Bowls Benefit was a huge success! Thank you to all who took the time to paint a bowl or participate in the benefit! Many empty bowls will be filled because of you! THANKS!

Tannenbaum Festival Fundraiser

The Art and About group is decorating a Christmas tree with the theme of "Dr. Suess" to be auctioned off at the Tannenbaum Festival. For more information on making ornaments for the tree contact Art and About members Randy Bolt or Becky Paral. Randy has reserved a room on Saturday, October 30th from 11-3:30 at the Rahr West for an ornament making get together, please help out if you can for this fun event.

Here is more information on the Event:

Lakeshore Community Action Program Inc. will hold its third annual fundraiser, "Tannenbaum 2010: Season of Giving," from 1 to 10 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Best Western Lakefront Hotel, 101 Maritime Drive. Lakeshore CAP is a nonprofit organization that serves people in need throughout the lakeshore.

Specially designed and decorated trees are highlights of the event, sponsored by Modern Woodman. Visitors can vote on trees and bid on trees in the silent auction.

Kid- and family-oriented activities, from 1 to 5 p.m., will include games with prizes, entertainment, a craft project, storytelling, face painting and snacks. Admission is free and activity tickets are 25 cents. Holiday family portrait sittings will take place from 1 to 7 p.m. Sitting fee is $20.

Tickets are on sale for the event, which begins at 6 p.m., will be emceed by local news anchor Tom Zalaski and will feature the band, One Step at a Time. There will be appetizers, a cash bar, door prizes, raffles, and silent and live auctions. Cost is $10 in advance and $15 at the door. For more information about Tannenbaum call 920-686-8734

The September meeting will be held at the Rahr-West Art Museum on Wed. Sept. 8 at 6pm. We will be glazing our soup bowls for those who hand built them for the "Empty Bowls" event.

Here is more information on the Empty Bowls Event:

The Two Rivers Optimist Club is inviting the public to participate in a fun way to raise funds for the Two Rivers Mishicot Ecumenical Pantry during the Empty Bowls event. You can join other creative and concerned painters in a community painting in the fireplace lobby of the J.E. Hamilton Community House, 1520 17th St., Two Rivers, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 18.
If you cannot attend this painting session, call Amy Zander at (920) 794-1532 to set up a time in her Artworks Etc. studio. The cost is $5 to paint a bowl, which covers the cost of the bowl, paints and glazing.
The bowls then will be available for a fundraising event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 10 at the J.E. Hamilton Community House. A lunch of soup, bread, desert and a beverage, all donated from area restaurants, with your choice of a hand-painted ceramic bowl from the community will be offered at a cost of $10 for an adult. If a meal with no ceramic bowl is your wish, the cost is $7.

August Meeting-RAKU project (part 3of3)

On August 15 we finished the final process for our Raku pottery project at Amy Zanders studio. We had a fun time with a potluck dinner to enjoy while our Raku pottery was being fired. A big THANK YOU to Amy for her generosity and guidance with this fun project!!!

The raku firing process requires a special raku kiln that is fueled by propane and reaches temperatures of about 1800°F (about 982°C) In order to complete the firing process, the raku pottery must remain in the kiln for approximately 30 minutes. The raku pottery is then removed from the kiln using specially designed raku tongs. While the raku pottery piece is still hot and glowing, it is placed inside a metal can full of combustible materials. The heat emitted from the raku pottery causes these materials to catch on fire.

After the materials inside the metal can catch on fire, a lid is placed over the can and the raku pottery is sealed inside. The raku pottery is capable of withstanding these high temperatures and the fire within the can because it is made from a special type of clay that is capable of withstanding thermal shock. Traditional pottery clays, on the other hand, would crack from the drastic temperature changes raku pottery undergoes.As the fire consumes the oxygen within the can, it also draws the oxygen out of the raku pottery and its glaze. This process is called post fire reduction. It is the post fire reduction stage that creates the unique look of raku pottery. The resulting patterns and colors are unpredictable, as they are created through the natural process of oxygen removal.After the raku pottery remains in the sealed metal can for about 15 minutes, it is removed and placed in a can of water. This freezes the patterns that were created during the post fire reduction stage. The amount of time a piece should remain in the cooling water largely depends on the piece and its size.

Amy puts the hot pottery piece that was just taken out of the kiln into the metal bucket with newspaper and sawdust. The cover is then placed on the bucket and the piece is allowed to cool. June Meeting Project RAKU ( part 1 of 3 )

At our June meeting we started the first step for our Raku Pottery project led by Art and About member Amy Zander.

ABOUT RAKU POTTERY:

Raku pottery is created with a specific ceramic firing process that uses both fire and smoke to create unique patterns and designs. With raku pottery, the piece is first bisque fired. Then, it is glazed and undergoes a raku firing process. The raku firing process requires a special raku kiln that is fueled by propane and reaches temperatures of about 1800°F (about 982°C)

At our May meeting we decorated a canvas bag and filled it with new donated art supplies from our group which was auction off at The 3rd. Annual Hayden's Hope Benefit that was held on May 29 at the Two Rivers Community House. May Meeting Homework Results "Wine"

The homework for the April meeting was "cake", several people came up with some artful ideas. Theresa Paral made a "box" cake, which actually turned out to be a cardboard box covered with frosting, much to the dismay of the group who had gotten hungry for it and found out it wasn't a real one :( (fooled us all). JoAnn Klechner made a flyer for a project with a cake theme and Kim Geiser made a colorful painting with a funny cake related saying.

The March meeting was held at the Rahr West Art Museum at 6pm. These are some of the activities and events that will be going on this year. Our Homework for this meeting was "Pickles" and many of the members came up with some really cool artsy ideas and some members even brought pickled veggies...very yummy! This "Pickle" art was created by me (Paula Radl), I will take pictures at future meetings of some of our homework art, so show us what you got!!

Art and About is directly involved with planning, coordinating, and conducting many activities throughout this year, and help is needed. Please contribute to any of these; especially if there's something you are enthusiastic about. Many friendships have been kindled among the members of Art & About, and it's fun to spend time doing good things with such great people. See you at our April meeting. Same BAT TIME, same BAT CHANNEL! April 14, 6:00 p.m., Rahr West Art Museum.

PRESS AND PROMOTIONS-Dani Morantez stepped down as our Chairperson, and we need a volunteer. Please let us know!

CHAIRS FOR CHARITY- There is @ $2450.00 available to scholarship applicants. Committee will be deciding this week and will share the good news at our next meeting. A great success; thank you everybody.

RANDY'S EVENT-Mother/daughter day was held at Lisa's Quilting this Sunday, and Randy invited all to his beading seminar. Hope it was a success!

WINTER MARKET AT MANITOWOC COFFEE-So far, just Barbara has exibited, so there's room for you. Any member can bring work right to the Art and About table at 8:45 or sooner to set up and help man the booth for the day. Show is from 9:00 to 2:00 each Saturday until May 8th. URBAN GREEN GANG-Facebook 'Urban Green Gang'. There is an operating committee presently of 6 people, with @ 125 comunicating via facebook. Saturday April 24th is downtown Manitowoc clean up day. KRAZY DAZE-July 10th....This is going to be fun, and a super duper (my words) fundraiser for Art & About.
ART AND ABOUT RUMMAGE SALE @ Persimmons. 2 to 3 days before, bring priced goods (NO CLOTHES, PLEASE). Day of event: 3 to 4 people 6:30 a.m. set up, Cashiers and "security" from 8:00 until close. There will be an art area, too. More details as event approaches.

SPUTNIKFEST-The deadline for an artist show space is August 1st, but the sooner, the better. Fee is $50.00 for a 10' by 10' area. Registration through Rahr West, and by email to Kim's email....gkgeiser@yahoo.com. Include description, pictures, and an artist profile. There is room for 50 artists, and blocked off streets. Excellent venue.

FALL STUDIO AND GALLERY TOUR-We need someone to be our host studio/gallery. This would entail coordinating and deligating tour responsibilities and hosting the Saturday evening artist reception (which, coincidently, is much fun.). I had thought of hosting, but want to wait until my studio garage is up and running.

TANNENBAUM FESTIVAL-Art and About will be making an original design, one of a kind Christmas tree for this event in November. We brainstormed many ideas, and then absent members started to express additional ideas, so I think it would be more creative to consider more ideas before deciding on something. At April's meeting, we'll do some more brainstorming, have more discussion, and decide a final theme. (Brenda, chairperson)

OUR OWN NEWS-Mike showed two glass sculptures, and detailed his recent work. He's working green, using recycled materials, and the pieces are suitable for outdoor environments. His work is shown at Petals Plus (Laurels Gallery), Check it out and bring a friend!

A fun part of our meeting involved an open discussion of member ideas, goals, current work, and individual artist's desires. We talked about our aspirations and future dreams. What a great service Art and About provides to us. Art and About serves as a networking tool, a place to bounce around different ideas, and an excellent means for artist collaborations and wonderful friendships. We don't expect Art and About to directly sponsor all of our endeavors; but we are excited to see what the future holds for everyone in our group! One of the things I miss about art and furniture school is how much we learned from each other in a studio and workshop setting. My conversations and experiences with artists and friends stimulates my creativity and drives my commitment to producing quality handwork. I hope your experience with Art and About fosters your growth as well. Keep those ideas and conversations flowing, please!

February 10, 2010 meeting

We had a lot of fun at our Feb. Art and About meeting, which was held at the Rahr West Art Museum. We did a progressive picture where everyone had a sheet of paper and had one minute to draw something and pass it to the next person so they could add to it.... and so on and so on...we had 20 people, so it took 20 minutes and each ended up with a completed drawing. So much fun to see what everyone ended up with. This is the picture I ended up with after it was all said and done...how funky cool is that!

The theme for this months homework art project was "Hearts", many of the members shared their wonderfully creative pieces.
Next month (March) we have the theme of "Pickles", lets have some fun with this one.

February Meeting

Thanks to everyone who very generously donated beautiful works of art for the 2009 Chairs for Charity! The way it looks right now we will have well over the 100 chairs we were hoping for! They are on display now at the Rahr West Museum in the main gallery and the oral auction will be on Saturday November 21st. Doors open at 5pm and the oral auction with the fabulous Charlie Kurth will begin at 6:30. There will also be a silent auction that will begin when the doors open at 5 and continue until intermission. Refreshments will be served at about 5:30. It is honestly and event you will not want to miss. Tickets are a suggested donation of only $5 and all proceeds from admission and the auctions will be put right back into the arts in Manitowoc County through a Rahr West Scholarship Fund, funding educational programs at the Rahr West and funding Art and Abouts free art projects put on throughout the year. If you agree that art is an important part of this and every community come out and support the arts on November 21st!

We Need YOU!!!!

We need all crafty/artsy people to get out your art supplies grab an old chair and decorate it for our 2009 Chairs for Charity Auction. The auction will be on Saturday November 21st at the Rahr West Museum with doors opening at 5pm! We will be accepting tastefully decorated chairs until November 9th but would love to display them sooner to spread the word about this fun event. If you have a chair to donate just bring it to Persimmons at 314 N 8th Street. IF you have old chairs but don't have any artistic ability we will take plain chairs too for artists to work their magic on! Proceeds for this event will go for art scholarships for Manitowoc County young artists, to the Rahr West Museum, a little goes to Art and About for future events and hopefully we can raise even more to donate to a worthy local cause. It is up to everyone to make this a wildly successful event! So come on and grab that paint and brushes and create for art's sake!

Spring Art Tour 2009

Come join us for a weekend of art and fun for the 2009 Spring Art Tour. The tour will be starting off with an open reception at We Are Art at Brenda Lynn Burtard Studios at 1006 Margaretha Street in Two Rivers. The reception will feature music by Pick and Squeeze, refreshments, and great art. There will also be a silent auction of original birdhouses created by members of Art and About. Prior to the event you can see the birdhouses on display at the Rahr West Museum. The proceeds for the birdhouse auction will be donated to Hayden's Hope. Hours for the opening reception are 6pm-9pm.

On Saturday you can tour 9 local galleries/studios. Take a peek into the environment where artists create their works! With demonstrations throughout the day you will get to see the techniques and materials used to create beautiful works of art that will also be available to purchase. For exact demonstration times and locations you can pick up your map and tour guide and any of the galleries/studios listed below! Many of the participating galleries and studios will also have a giveaway for a chance to win art originals! It is a great FREE event that is very family friendly. Hours for the Saturday tour are 10am-4pm. Hope to see you there!

Art and About met at the Rahr-West Art Museum at 6:00 P.M with 22 current and / or new members present—one of our biggest meetings so far.

Chairs for Charity
§ We discussed this year’s up and coming Chairs for Charity event on November 21st, 2009 at the Rahr-West.
§ Chairs should be delivered to the museum NO LATER THAN November 9th and will be on display until the time of the auction. HOWEVER, please start those chairs now! We would like to have them on display throughout the spring / summer / and up till November 9th. The more we have out—the more successful the event will be.
§ All Manitowoc county high school art departments are invited to have their students design a new logo for this year’s Chairs for Charity event. The logo / poster contest will offer a $100.00 cash prize to the winning design and a companion prize of a $50.00 gift card to Hobby Lobby to the winning designer’s teacher / mentor. Contest committee members include Jo Woodcock, Amy Zander, Bonnie Loeh, and Paula Radl.
§ At this point there are two main committees needed for the Chairs for Charity event. The first is a press / media committee—to handle press coverage of the event including newspaper advertising, radio, et cetera; and a contacts committee—to contact local businesses to participate in the event by either donating items such as refreshments for the reception, possible matching funds, or offering their business for chair display. There was a sign up sheet passed around for at the meeting—there were many volunteers thus far however, if you were not at the meeting but would like to be a part of a committee, please consider what you will be willing to do for this year’s event.
§ By next month’s meeting, Heather and Kim will provide each group with a more complete list of committee expectations.
§ We also discussed the reception and would like to lengthen the reception time as well as offer free wine along with the hors douvres. Free wine makes for holey pockets!
Spring Tour:
§ Brenda Ricky will be the host for the spring tour on May 15th and 16th. She would like commitments by next month as artists and studios that will be participating. If there are any artists who do not have a studio but would like a display space please contact Brenda at 920-553-2787 and matches will be made.
§ The fee for studio participation in the tour is $40.00 the first year to cover sign costs and $25.00 thereafter. There was some discussion whether or not independent artists should pay a fee to display at someone else’s gallery and it was decided that each artist could discuss the issue with their host and work out something on a case-to-case basis.

Fall Tour:
§ Just a note that the fall tour is on October 23, 24, 2009.
§ No one has yet to volunteered to host—anyone interested?

Farmers Market:
§ Exciting news for the farmers market—there will be a Tuesday evening slot this year! The Tuesday time slot will be from 3:00 to 8:00 PM and will run from June 16th to October 20th.
§ Saturdays will remain at 7:00 AM to 1:00 PM and will begin May 15th.
§ One of the great perks of being an Art & About member is that any paid member may sign up to exhibit at the farmers market—free of charge! The club pays the $100.00 yearly fee and Art & About members may use the space.
§ We would like as many, if not all, of the time slots to be filled—you may have the space to yourself or you may share with another member. Just remember to display the Art & About sign at your booth / table.
§ Sign up will begin next month, as Barb will bring a sign up sheet to the next meeting. Please see Barb for any questions about the farmers market and PLEASE do not just show up to the market—make arrangements with her. She is our spokesperson and all assignments must go through Barb.

Dues

Other news:
§ Amy Zander’s new studio is up and running. It is located in her backyard! Her husband built it for her—what a nice guy!
§ Also, Tom Chermake, who organizes Metro Jam, would like to have an art component to this year’s Jam. It is usually around the second weekend in June. If anyone would be interested in doing something like that—contact Tom Chermake or speak to Kim.
§ The Bead and Button Show will be in Milwaukee on June 14th. According to Kim it is a lots of fun and just plain crazy-good if you are a bead lover. A number of people already said they would like to go—we are planning to have several van-fulls of people. If you’d like to go, or drive, let us know. Still lots of time before June, but according to Kim, you better save up now!
§ Paula Radl brought up a very cool thing she has come across—using old cigarette machines as art vending! What a cool idea! She is going to look into finding one that the group can purchase / restore and maybe we could do something with it!
§ Kim is looking into buying the group a domain name so we don’t have to have such a big handle for our blogspot—which is: www.artandabout54220.blogspot.com I’d personally like to see the zip code removed—as many of our members do not actually live in the city of Manitowoc.
§ Go to Stump-Jack’s to see Nate Walkner’s show—opening this weekend. Something with the word ‘orama’ in it—should be good.
§ Also, if you’d like a little night music—go to the Courthouse Pub on February 20th beginning at 10:00 PM to see Adam Morantez per his wife Dani who will hopefully be a new member of the group. Also, they will both be at the Health and Wellness fair.
§ Art & About will have a booth at the UW extension on April 18th from 10 – 2. The booth will be about recycled art and there will be a recycle-type art project for people to make—paper beads.
§ Kim was invited to participate in the “All things Strange and Wonderful” event at Horrace Mann middle school. She’ll be doing some cool art.

Art and About met at the Rahr-West Art Museum at 6:00 P.M. There were several members present including: Heather Doucette, Jo Woodcock, Paula Radl, Brenda Ricky, Amy Zander, Bonnie Loeh, Mary Kay Burish, Randy Boldt, and new members, Paige Harrington, Katie Young, and Rachel Young. I apologize if any names are spelled incorrectly—let me know. We also had Joe Metzen of the Rahr join us.

Member Exhibit:
§ Most felt the exhibit went well—nice turn out. There was something like 165 people through the museum that day.
§ Art & About agreed to pay for part of the bill for the reception and the Rahr will let us know what our portion will be.
§ The show runs through Sunday, January 25th, so please pick up your work after that date.
§ There was some miscommunication as to press on the event—we will make sure that is taken care of for our next event and be more proactive as to publicity.

Dues

Visitor:
§ Joe Metzen (the new Mary Jo) came to the meeting to pitch an idea of a Manitowoc Arts website he would like to see for the community. He envisions the site having all area art events listed in one easy location and entries / announcement of events would be free to the public / local schools. Events could include, art shows, happenings at the Rahr, shows at the Civic Center, local high school plays, etc. There could be links to websites that serve the community, local libraries, museum and gallery links, links to area artists etc. We all agreed this would be a great site and would like to be a part of it. The question is do we have anyone in the group who does this kind of work—setting up and maintaining sites—or should the work just be farmed out and paid for? We agreed Art & About would love to be a part of the site and willing to pay a fee to participate. § Heidi Dahlberg has been kind enough to offer to put together an Art & About directory unfortunately she is having a hard time collecting information. You can add as little or as much as you like—all your info or just your name.

Chairs for Charity:
§ We discussed this year’s up and coming Chairs for Charity event on November 21st, 2009 at the Rahr-West. We discussed whether or not we should be looking for a new logo or if we should keep what we have and use it every year. There were a variety of plusses in either case—less cost per event, recognition of design, verses, more printing costs per event, variety of design, involving the community in logo creation.
§ Those present felt we still wanted to go along with a new design and will go ahead with the logo / poster contest plan.
§ I will be sending out a letter to all local high school art departments in Manitowoc county by the end of January to announce a contest to design this year’s Chairs for Charity event. The logo / poster contest will offer a $100.00 cash prize to the winning design and a companion prize of a $50.00 gift card to Hobby Lobby to the winning designer’s teacher / mentor.

§ We also need to form committees for the event so consider what you will be willing to or able to do for this year’s event. Our first event turned out to be much more work than was anticipated. For this year’s event we all agreed that the work should be shared more equally among the group.
§ So far, the committees needed are a media committee—to handle press coverage of the event, a contacts committee—to contact local businesses to participate in the event. There will be more to come as there are many other needs to take care of so by next month, Heather and Kim will have a more complete list of jobs needing to be done for the event.
§ Ask not what Chairs for Charity can do for you...but what YOU can do for Chairs for Charity!

Other news:

§ The Rahr-West is planning a fun bike event on June 6th when they will unveil a new artful bike rack created specifically for the Rahr-West by Paul Kaufman—an artistic welder. However Paul is in need of some old copper and is looking for an old copper lined water heater and some copper tubing—1 ¼ inch to 1/ ½ inch. If you know of anywhere he can find some or can help him out in any way, please contact the Rahr at 920-683-4501.

One more thing…

Art and About met at the Rahr-West Art Museum at 6:00 with a skeleton crew present. We discussed the fall tour, the Chairs for Charity poster contest, and the farmer’s market.

Fall tour:
§ We discussed how we felt the fall tour went. There was a nice turn out however not great for sales.
§ The spring tour will be May 15 and 16
§ The fall tour will be held October 23, 24, with the opening reception at We Are Art! at Brenda Lynn Burtard Studios, 1006 Margaretha St., Two Rivers

Chairs for Charity poster contest:
§ I went over the Chairs for Charity poster contest rules with the group to finalize details. Basically, we will be sending out a letter to all area high school art teachers asking them to involve their students in a poster contest to create the image we will be using for next year’s event. There will be a $100.00 top prize for the winning design. More on the contest will be coming—we will be sending out info after the first of the new year. § I also brought a book to share that I found in our school library entitled “Speak”. It is a collaboration of children’s illustrators each offering a story about their dog and an accompanying illustration.
§ In keeping with the flavor of the book, we thought it would be a good idea for us to do something on that order—where we all contribute to a publication—in the form of a calendar. We have plenty of artists to fill 12 months. It is definitely something we want to look into for the future. We could get area businesses to sponsor a page and we could also include area goings-on and of course, our own tours and happenings. Keep it in mind—any particular month you’d like to create something for?????? I get July. It’s my favorite month.

Farmer’s Market:
§ The farmer’s market went relatively well this past year but there were a few bumps. Barb Ferguson would like any suggestions or constructive criticisms to improve things for next year. Many felt there could be better communication between exhibitors.
§ Also, we are going to skip the tent entirely. Every vendor is on their own. This way the tent and weights don’t have to be passed around.
§ We felt it may be a good idea to have some sort of signed agreement with vendors to keep things running more smoothly and establish responsibility.
§ The market starts up again in the beginning of May. And new this year—or revived this year—will be a new night. Tuesday afternoon / evenings from 3:00 – 7:00 PM the market will be open as well. they are hoping to make a little more of the event and perhaps have music etc.
§ Yearly cost for the booth remains the same.

Member Exhibit:
§ Don’t forget the Art & About member exhibit is coming up SOON—right after Christmas so be prepared! The date is January 11th – 24th at the Rahr-West Art Museum with opening reception on Sunday.
§ Work must be in to the Rahr-West by Friday, January 2nd.
§ We also thought we could use the opening day as an informal winter gathering—maybe we can go out to eat afterwards—still open for discussion…
§ Reminder that all work exhibited should be ‘family friendly’.

In other news…
§ Kim attended the recent Tannenbaum gala at the Rahr and thought that perhaps the group should do a tree next year. We could make ornaments during a meeting or two. We’ll discuss it again at a later date.
§ Also, I mentioned that I would be willing to organize a trip to the Chicago Art Institute in the spring if there is enough interest. We would most likely open the tour to the public as well. We would need enough people to fill a coach bus, which is usually 45 to 50 people. Just a thought—let me know sometime if you would be interested in a trip to Chicago. We would probably aim for a Tuesday because that is the ‘free’ day at the institute.

This weekend…
§ Holiday on the Lakeshore will be held this weekend the 14th and 15th at Fox Hills featuring, among many, two of our artists, Kim and Heather. Hours are 2 – 9 on Friday and 9 – 5 on Saturday.
§ Maybe next year Art & About could split the cost of a booth and have several artists attend.

That was about it.

Our next meeting is on December 10th at 6:00 PM at the Rahr-West Art Museum. We will be making decorative Christmas trees! They’ll be just like the ones I make with my first graders. I will bring the tree cut outs (about an 8 to 10 inch cardboard cut out) a few sparkly things, and the glue. Anyone is welcome to bring other items to share for decoration i.e. buttons, old jewelry, spangles, beads, whatever. My sister and I used to call such stuff—Geschnarell. I don’t really know what that means but it seems to work.

Art and About Fall Art Tour
7 local galleries and studios will open their doors on Saturday October 25th from 10-4 for the 7th Art and About Art Tour. The tour will kick off with an opening reception at Petals Plus Gallery and Gifts located at 7014 Center Road in Manitowoc. The Friday October 24th reception will be from 6pm-9pm and will include live music, refreshments and a pumpkin carving contest. The public is encouraged to attend the opening reception where they can pick up a brochure with the Saturday tour route.

And who was in the Art and About booth? Well, none other than the fabulous Kim and Heather, and Kim's lovely daughter Molly - noshing on a freshly made Hmong eggroll. Tried to sneak up on Kim and Heather for a photo, but they'd have none of that - they spied me as soon as the camera went up. What a lovely shot...

July Meeting Notes

This month's meeting was primarily geared toward creating peace and
happiness within the group. While we met, we also all decorated puzzle
pieces with positive words describing art 7 about on them...at the end
we put it together....what a masterpiece!

Some decisions were made on a few things that will change...

1. All events/info that you would like to see discussed at a meeting
must be emailed to Kim first. She will forward an agenda to the group
and that way if it is something that you want to be a part of or put
your "two cents" into, you can attend the upcoming meeting.

2. We also decided that we need to get to business quickly at meetings
and then move on to the fun and social part of our time together.
Someone will be responsible for each meeting's demo or
project...rotating the responsibility around to everyone who is
interested.

3. Business will be further discussed by event committees and
decisions regarding that event will be made by the members of that
committee...therefore, if yo want to be a part of making decisions
regarding a specific event...you may want to join that committee.
Committee members will then report back to Kim and/or the group.

A few other details were discussed and finalized at this meeting as
well...

* The art & about member exhibit will be held at the Rahr West Art
Museum in 2009 rather than at Roncalli. It will run from January 11-24
and be displayed in the corridor area and lounge (which are the areas
that we had the chairs in last year before the Chairs for Charity
Auction.)

*The 2009 Spring tour will be May 15 & 16.

*The 2009 Fall tour will be October 23 & 24

*Chairs for Charity will return for it's second year on November 21st
at the Rahr West! The chairs will be brought to the museum on November 9th

More to come later on these events....

Also, if anyone is interested in attending the County Art Exhibit
Reception, it is this coming Sunday, the 20th, from 1-4 at the Rahr
West...and Richard Young will be doing a demo from 2-3...

Also, Patrick Burke, one of our scholarship recipients, is currently
home from Italy and will be doing 2 demos at the Rahr West. They will
be on July 26th and 27th, both days from 12:30 - 3:30...for more info on either of these events,

I think that for the most part...this is what we discussed...

Sixteen members of Art & About met for what started out as a tension filled meeting at 6:00 PM at the Rahr-West art museum.
There was much ado about the farmer’s market seeing that there were three booths set up on Saturday and some confusion about who should have been there. So, we will start with that even though that was not the first item on the agenda—it seemed to hold the most weight.

Farmer’s Market:
Due to some miscommunication, this past Saturday there were three people / exhibitors representing the Art & About booth at the farmers market. Because it is early in the year, and the market is not too full as of yet, this incident was allowed to slide. However, this CANNOT happen again. We realize it was simply an oversight and not faulting anyone, but aside from being unfair to other exhibitors who have also paid for their (ONE) space, we are the first and only group allowed to hold a spot in the market. This is new to them so if we cannot run our booth successfully this first year, they may not allow us back next year. It would be a shame to lose out on such a great opportunity.
So here are a few guidelines…

§ Barb Ferguson IS IN CHARGE of ALL activity at the farmer’s market. Dates and times CANNOT be changed without her knowledge.
o Her number is: 920-629-1193.
§ Because booth space has been paid for by Art & About, it is imperative that the groups’ materials be placed in plain view. The banner, cards, and exhibitor number MUST be present at all times no matter how the booth is set up whether it be tent or table. The artist / exhibitors work, although important and worthy, is really secondary to the groups’ interests.
§ Also, each exhibitor is responsible to get the materials (supply box) to the next person on the list. Please do not bring the box to Persimmons (unless Kim is next on the list) or return to Barb. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to contact the next person on the list and make arrangements to deliver the supply box. There is a list in the box with everyone listed including phone numbers. The list will also be posted on our blog spot in the near future.
o Incidentally, once again, our blog spot address is:

§ Currently, the tent is broken however; Theresa said she would exchange it for another.
§ Be careful when using the tent as well, it can get very windy near the lake / river. Use weights or simply don’t use the tent if it’s too windy. Another suggestion was to take the top or sides off. Create a space for the air to circulate so you don’t accidentally implode! Although funny to see, not so funny if it hits someone or their property.
§ Speaking of which, we briefly discussed liability insurance. Is this something we need to discuss further? Let us know what you think.

Spring tour

§ In general, everyone thought the spring tour went well and in time, it will grow. The punch card thing was a good idea and prizes were awarded to four people. They were ecstatic about winning a prize. Aren’t we all?
§ There was some question on how the advertisement read for the Friday night open house. We will recheck this info for next year and make sure it makes sense to someone who is not in the group.

Techno geeks

There was some discussion at the meeting concerning the ‘how top’s’ of some basic technical things. Some people are not sure on how to get onto the blogspot or how to maneuver in a website, or how to take a decent photo of artwork so it looks good, et cetera.

§ So, next month’s meeting with be a ‘Techno’ meeting.
§ Tim and I will give some tips on how to set up a good photo (like we know) so bring your cameras and a piece of work or two so we can set up some shots. We talked about doing just a photo shoot day—perhaps we could do some of this during the meeting as well.
§ Kim is going to bring her half-#$$ed light box made from a cardboard and tag.
§ We are hoping to have a computer handy as well to go over the basics as to how to get onto the blog et cetera.
§ If anyone has anything else they’d like to do or demonstrate—let us know.
§ Kim is looking into the group buying a domain name as well so we can be easier to find.

Sputnikfest projects

§ We will be making four photo-op cut outs for Sputnikfest. Theresa will get the wood to Heather’s shop and at that point we can meet to prime and paint. Heather will let us know when the wood arrives so if anyone has some free time they can just stop over to her studio and get started. The priming should be done ahead of time. Then we can meet at a later date to do some painting.
§ The museum would like one of the cut outs to be of the two police officers that found the space object. The other three boards are still open for ideas. I thought it would be cool to do a ‘spacey’ American Gothic couple.
§ There are still NO applicants for Miss Sputnikfest! Can you believe that? Come on you people; how good do you look in that 60’s chic?

Chairs for Charity 2009

§ Our next ‘chair’-ity event will be held once again at the Rahr-West art museum, this time however; we are looking at a November date. The Rahr will be having a quilt show so perhaps the event could coincide.
§ This year there will be a sign-up sheet going around at some point so more of the responsibilities are evened out and everyone has a chance to participate.
§ An artist all-call will be organized by Annette and myself to find a new poster / logo for next year’s event. It was decided that the winning artwork would be awarded a $100.00 cash prize. So get those pencils sharpened! More info on the contest coming soon.
§ There was a question raised also about possibly giving some of the proceeds to a local charity. Any thoughts? Monies from the past event were divided as such: half went to the scholarship fund, a quarter went to the museum, and a quarter went to Art & About.

Summer picnic

§ There will be a summer swap and picnic at Laurel’s place on Monday, August 4th. Bring along any artwork, supplies, or whatever, to swap, sell, or trade with your fellow artists.
§ The party starts at 5:00 ish and we will eat at 6:00. Swapping, selling, or trading can take place after we eat so everyone has a chance at the goods. It should be fun.
§ Please bring a dish to pass. And Kim says: “Don’t get too fancy!” No salmonella tomatoes please!

§ Heather got a call from A.J. Schroeder who says they are looking for artists to lease space on the third floor of their department store. Anyone interested may contact A.J. directly at: 920-793-2241.
§ Kim’s aunt Cindy called from Green Bay to let her know that the Ben Franklin on Mason street is going out of business! Big bargains! Better get up there!

Spring Art Tour

The spring tour will be on Friday and Saturday, May 16rd and 17th. Friday from 6 – 9 there will be an opening reception with refreshments at Full Circle Products Studio and Saturday from10 – 4 you can take a FREE tour of 6 local gallery/studios featuring guest artists, live demonstrations, and art projects.
One week before the tour there will be maps available at the participating locations. In addition to the free tour you can also win a prize by getting a card stamped at all locations on the tour. Art and About met at the Rahr-West art museum at 6:00 PM in room 1. Those present were: Heather, Kim, Jo, Amy Z., newcomer Sarah, who will be 20 very soon, Judy R., Brenda R., Maria B., Randy, Annette W., Laurel S., who is very ‘earthy’, Mary Kay B. and twin sister Bonnie, and last, but certainly not least, Barbara Ferguson.

Scholarship status:
§ Five of the six on the scholarship committee read over all of the applications. After much deliberation we all came up with nearly identical decisions.
§ The top two recipients of the first ever Art and About Chairs for Charity Scholarship were announced and they are: Patrick Burke who is a sculptor apprentice and is studying in Italy; and Jacqueline Muench (spelling may be incorrect) who is a senior in high school and will be going on to be an art teacher.
§ Letters will be sent to the winners and all others who applied for the scholarship. We would like to have a reception or some kind of presentation to award the recipients—details pending.
§ Next time around we need to be more specific concerning our expectations of the applicants. Perhaps next time we will have more of a form to complete along with an essay and we will specify the number of artworks / examples of work expected from each applicant. We originally said we wanted the money to go towards tuition and perhaps weren’t clear enough on that issue so we need to more specify state our intentions for future scholarships.
§ Overall, we were very pleased with the result and look forward to doing it again! Next time it will be that much easier.

Spring Tour:

Manitowoc Farmer’s Market:
§ Barbara Ferguson is in charge of the sign up for the Farmer’s market. Anyone interested in taking a Saturday, please contact Barb at 920-692-1193 for information and dates available.
§ Art and About has paid the fee for the year. This is a great perk for our club so please take advantage of this excellent opportunity to show your stuff and be a part of the art (and vegetable) community.
§ The booth is a 10 x 10 space and we do have a pop up tent available for anyone who does one.
§ Hours for the market are 7:00 AM ‘til 1:00 PM. You must be up and running at 7:00 AM.
§ We are looking into having a sign made that reads: Booth sponsored by Art and About. Guess who will be doing that?
§ The first week of the Manitowoc farmer’s market is May 10th, which is coming up sooner than you think!

§ FYI: the fall tour is October 24th and 25th
§ Don’t forget about the local artist show at the Rahr-West in July. Pick up your application at the Rahr.
§ Artta This World is looking for artists for the art fair during Sputnik Fest. It will be a juried fair. Applications are due by July 15th. For more information go to www.sputnikfest.com .
§ Also, we now have plywood for cool spacey photo-op cutouts that we (Art and About) said we would do for Sputnik Fest. We have 7 pieces of wood so start coming up with some cool spacey ideas. We will probably have a painting party to do them amass. More on that later.
§ Reminder Kim has a show up at Stump Jacks so if you didn’t get there—what are you waiting for?
§ Also, Kim has classes every Thursday night at her store—where are you people? Tomorrow she will be having felt hair clip night! And on the 24th she is having shrinky-dink night!!! How cool is that? Call Kim for more details.
§ We have decided to start a sign up sheet for snacks—some of us get hungry during meetings. Especially now that they are so early. Well, half an hour seems to make a difference. Kim and Laurel will bring edibles next time.
§ Coming up on July 12th during Crazy Daze—Kim is looking for a few artisans to grace her shop. She would like a total of 8 artists / booths for $25.00 a booth. Call Kim if you are interested. She has three already but has room for more.
§ FYI: there will be a benefit for Casey Herman (friend of Kim’s) who has a brain tumor and things are not looking very good for him. If you would like to help out the family please come to Meadow Lanes West for a benefit in his honor on April 26th. Call owner of Meadow Lanes West Amy Swanson for more info.

February Meeting Notes.

Art and About met, for the first time to my knowledge, without Kim present. However, those of us in the know were there in her stead.
Those present included Heather, who is not Kim, Jo, who is the secretary, Theresa who is acting as Becky’s agent although underpaid, Randy (comic relief), Bonnie who is our treasurer deluxe, Mary Kay Burish who is Bonnie’s sister, relative newcomer Heidi, who is a medical illustrator, and new member Michael Marr who was probably frightened off by the lot. Welcome Mike, please stay, we promise to behave. Well, we’ll see.
Basics of the meeting included the member’s exhibit, Chairs for Charity scholarship fund, farmer’s market, and the spring tour.
Member’s exhibit:
§ Set p for the exhibit is on Friday February 29th at 9 – noon. If you are available to help set up please come and help—goes faster with more present.
§ Exhibit runs Friday from 6 – 9 with an opening reception—Kim is in charge of food—cheese, grapes, etc. We will have punch—Tim will make sure there is a punch bowl and table for the reception.
§ There will be a $5.00 entry fee for the exhibit to cover the cost of advertisement and refreshments etc.
§ Please bring all entries to Roncalli on or before the 29th. You can drop them off at the office of the school or bring them directly to the art room. If you cannot get to Roncalli but have work to exhibit—please call one of us and we’ll work something out.
§ I will be in charge of kids’ crafts for the afternoon from noon to 2 or however long the supplies hold out. Heather wants to make ‘rockin’ recycled rockets’ out of toilet paper tubes—I’m sure this will be a bit hit with kids. Other crafts / and activities for kids will be a bead / bracelet making station, origami basics, and a famous artist coloring page station. Those wanting to help out with the kids are welcome. You don’t need to have any skills to help with kids—they all love art and are thrilled to make stuff. Any other ideas or crafts are welcome—but let me know what you have in mind so we can be sure to have all the materials needed for the afternoon. Thanks.

Scholarship:
§ We are very excited to announce that there were nine applicants for the Chairs for Charity scholarship. We would like to organize a committee of six people who would be willing to review the applicants and choose one or two of the recipients for an art scholarship. Those on the committee thus far are:

§ As you can see we are in need of two others interested in reviewing the applications. Please let me know via email if you are interested in being on the committee. We will also have to make a date and place as to when / where to meet.

Farmer’s Market:
§ Barb Ferguson will be the booth coordinator for the farmer’s market. Theresa Paral said she has an easy-up tent we can use until we can secure one of our own for the group if this endeavor works out well. Anyone interested in having the booth on a Saturday should contact Barb. It would be great if we can get this going steadily so the community comes to expect our presence at the farmer’s market.

Spring Tour:
§ The Spring Tour will be May 16 and 17.
§ Deadline for entry in the tour is April 30th. So far we only have Petals Plus, Persimmons, and Full Circle Products. We are looking for more entries for the tour—please contact Kim or Heather if you would like to have your gallery on the tour docket or if you are an artist without a space and would like to display your work again, please contact Kim or Heather.
§ Tour demos will be from 10 – 4 anyone wanting to demonstrate what you do please let us know.
§ Also, we need a count for the postcards—if you have a mailing list let us know how many you will need to advertise the tour. In the future we would like to merge these lists so we can just do one mass mailing. Anyone like doing that sort of thing?

Other:
§ Rahr-West table setting exhibit runs through the 20th. Maybe we could do one next year as a group? That would be fun! Tim and I did a few a few years ago—it was lots of fun.
§ We did not set a place for next month’s meeting but it will be on the second Wednesday of the month so that would make it March 12th. See you soon at the exhibit and upcoming tour.

Art and About meeting notes for January 9, 2008
We met at Persimmons at 6:30.

Heather, although not the boss and not officially in charge, put together an outline for us to follow at the meeting. Good thing too because I am a secretarial putts. Thank you Heather!
Anyway, dues were collected from those who attended and anyone who has not paid their dues may do so at any time. Bonnie Loeh will be our treasurer—thanks Bonnie! Make checks payable to Art and About. You may pay your dues at our next meeting on February 13th or bring it in to Persimmons. Dues are $25.00 a year for adults and $15.00 a year for students. Dues must be paid on or before our member’s exhibit on Feb. 29th / March 1st.
As mentioned our yearly member’s exhibit will be held at the Roncalli Atrium Gallery on Friday, February 29th with an opening reception from 6:00 – 9:00; and on Saturday, March 1st from 10:00 – 4:00. There will also be art projects / stations for kids of various ages from noon to 2:00. Yours truly will be organizing the projects and will need a few people to help man the stations. I’m thinking we will have three or four stations. So far ideas are beading / bracelet making, paper kites, foil repousse’ or metal punch, origami paper folding, and / or ….? Anyone having some wonderful idea for a project may share it with me—I’m open for ideas. I am planning on having something to appeal to a variety of age groups.
We would also like to have someone at the show at all times during the day on Saturday to answer questions, greet people, et cetera. Here is a list of those who have signed up so far:

We will be setting up the members exhibit on Friday morning, the 29th, beginning at 9:00 AM. Anyone willing and able to help is encouraged to come. We should have everything set up by noon. We will have Art and About name tags the morning of set-up—either you can write your own or someone (Tim or I) will write them for you. Bring all art to Roncalli that morning or, if you are unable to help set-up, please bring your work in anytime during that week—either drop it off in the art room or bring it to the main office. If you can’t make it to Roncalli that week, I’m sure Kim would be willing to house your work at Persimmons.
Everyone enjoyed the music at our opening reception so much last year that Kim is going to look into asking Greg, of Pick & Squeeze, to return. We are also just going to go with punch this year (no wine) so we don’t get into any trouble with the prohibitionists and otherwise fuddy-duddies of this country who think wine was created by the feet of the devil. And, even though European mothers serve wine to their children in their bottles, we are not allowed to drink wine in a Catholic school while viewing art or having fun. Because of course, having too much fun is frowned upon.
We will also have the return of the ‘chunk-o-cheese’ as we had in year one, crackers, and the ever popular olive penguins. I will need some help this year making the penguins because our usual penguin maker (my sister) will be out of the country at that time soaking up the golden rays of the sun in the Virgin Islands and she’s not even taking me along (although she did offer). Besides, I couldn’t go anyway; my bikini was lost at the cleaners.
Moving on to our spring tour…dates for the tour will be May 16th and 17th with the opening reception on Friday at Full Circle Products (Heather’s gallery) from 6 – 9 PM. On Saturday the times will be from 10 – 4. Gallery fee is $40.00. Please have your fee and info into Heather no later than April 30th so brochures and maps can be properly made to include your info. Any individual artist needing a space to display their work can let us know and we can match you with a gallery. We would also like demonstrations that day as well so again, anyone wanting to do a demo—let us know.
In other news…Kim Geiser of Persimmons will be having her own exhibit at Stump Jacks on Friday, March 28th. More info to come.
P.S., Kim could use some cool glass jars with lids if anyone has anything they’d like to get rid of.
Also, we have three or four applications already in for the Chairs for Charity scholarship fund and we will be viewing and discussing the applicants at a future Art and About meeting. We will keep you posted.
The Rahr-West museum, under the direction of Barbara Bundy Jost, is looking for art to be donated to an “Art” event coming up on Feb. 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, and 16. They are looking for artwork to be auctioned off during a silent auction. If you would like to donate a piece of art (100% of the proceeds will go to scholarships) please bring in your work or contact Barb at the museum ASAP.
And, on a last note, Ladies Day!, an inspirational day of artistic exploration and unbridled self expression, will be held on Saturday, January 19th at the Rahr-West Art Museum. Please RSVP ASAP if you are interested in enjoying the day—sounds like fun.

Chairs wrap up.

We haven't had a real serious meeting in a while but did meet in November to put together thank you notes to all of the people who attended or donated to the Chairs for Charity auction. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of a lot of people we raised a little over $4000!!!! Great great great job everyone! There is a scholarship available for students who are enrolled in an art program in any school beyond high school. The form is available at the Rahr West Museum and we will determine our recipient at the end of February. Again the proceeds from the auction will be split with 50% going to the scholarship fund, 25% going to the Rahr West museum to help fund things like workshops and education, and 25% to Art and About so we can continue to put on events that enhance our community through the visual arts.

Thanks again to everyone and start thinking about your chair ideas for Chairs for Charity 2009!!!

Art and About met at Stump Jack’s coffee house in Two Rivers at 6:30 on Wednesday night. Those present included, Heather, Bonnie, Marge, Amy, Barb, Laurel, Randy, Glenn, Kim, Jo, and Jolene. The fall tour and auction were the main agenda items for the evening.
We began the evening by sticking date stickers onto the charity auction flyers because the date was acci-purposly left out. The stickers made a great impact.
There are five galleries participating in the fall tour and they include: Persimmons, Full Circle Products, Petals Plus, Rahr-West, and Artworks. The Friday evening reception will be held at Persimmons so we can commiserate and otherwise hobnob with our fellow wizards. It was decided that we would have ‘pot luck’ hors-dourves at Kim’s so if you would like to bring something to share that would be great.
It was discussed as a possibility for the next tour to have a punch card so people can get a stamp on their card at each gallery and when they get all of them they get something—we don’t know what—but something. We think about that again next year.
The auction is coming up fast!
Heather and Kim were on the breakfast club on October 11th and will be on the Thursday edition of the Noon Show (channel 2) on October 18th. They will also be going to the farmer’s market again on Saturday October 20th and will start around 7:30 / 8:00 so if anyone would like to come and join them please do! It’s just to promote the auction and have fun.
Also, on the 22nd, a few of us are going to meet at Persimmons around 10:00 ish to collect all the chairs from around town and bring them to the museum. So, anyone who is able or would like to come and help—please do.
Tickets for the auction are already on sale. They may be purchased at Kim’s, Heather’s, or the Rahr. Suggested donation price is $5.00. Complimentary tickets will be given to anyone who donated a chair. There will be a table set up on the night of the auction at the Rahr for artists to claim their tickets—I will be manning that station. Artists will also be asked to wear a simple sticker / tag that says they are one of the artists. This is optional—so don’t panic.
A sign up sheet for jobs needing to be done at the Rahr on the night of the auction was sent around. Tim still needs to finalize getting a few students to help with the clean up—he also has a student who would be willing to take photos.

Although, the majority of the proceeds of the auction are earmarked for art scholarships, we thought it would be smart to attach specific numbers. Since we have no idea what the auction will bring in, we have decided to break the amount into percentages—50% of all profits will go toward local scholarships, 25% will go to Art and About, and the remaining 25% will go to the Rahr-West. So, in essence, 100% of the proceeds from the auction will go back into the local art community to fund future art projects / activities / exhibits, et cetera.

Our next meeting will be on Wednesday October 10 at 6:30 at Stumpjack Coffee at 1606 Washington Street. We will pretty much be talking about the tour and Chairs for Charity auction. However this happens to be a special day at Stumpjack too. At 8pm music will begin so you can stick around and enjoy the music after we meet. Iowa's "Rosalee Motor Revival" to play at Stumpjack Coffee Co.On Wednesday, October 10th 2007 at 8 p.m., Rosalee Motor Revival will be playing at Stumpjack Coffee Company located at 1606 Washington Street in Two Rivers.
Guitarist/lead singer John Watkins and guitarist/keyboardist MJ Dunlap are founding members of Rosalee Motor Revival, from the small Mississippi River town of Muscatine, Iowa and are currently touring the Midwest, playing anywhere and everywhere they can for the simple love of doing it.
"I love to have the quiet," Watkins said. "We started playing shows in the bookstore in town because we knew that there was no bar in town that would allow that music to be played. With this kind of music, it's easier to just create a show as opposed to waiting for a hot spot bar to book you. You can play in attics and bookstores and art galleries. You can play anywhere."Their first album, Tablespoon, released last year, garnered excellent reviews and received a lot of attention on the indie music scene. Sean Moeller of the Quad City Times wrote "The songs are full of dusty details and charming quirks, plus an endless supply of melody that Watkins chaperones with a versatile voice that travels from Royston Langdon of Spacehog to Gary Olson of The Ladybug Transistor and stomps around in graveyards and city parks it passes in between." And Culley Smith of the River Cities Reader said, "The tone of Tablespoon switches between cathartic and somber, playful and plucky, but Watkins' dynamic voice manages wistful, whimsical, and everything in between."
It was little more than serendipity that brought Watkins and Dunlap to Stumpjack Coffee. Owner, David Smith, received an email from the duo asking if they could play at the Two Rivers coffee shop while touring Wisconsin and Minnesota. Watkins said he discovered Stumpjack via "a winding trail through the internet, and at the end [Stumpjack] stood out like an oasis of quirky rustic goodness." In talking about their music Watkins also said "we're just two guys who play music, which some have labeled as dark weird indie folk…I write songs influenced by events and folks in my life...its great fun taking heart-wounding ugly moments and shining them up for a song…something to make people tap their feet or evoke in them a new way of thinking."
"These guys are really quite exceptional," says Smith, "They have a sound that is at turns delicate and beautiful and then very earthy and raw, and the songs are both humorous and touching yet also layered and very smart."

So Heather and I hung out at the farmers market with a few of our chairs for charity. It was super fun...we gave out tons of fliers...met lots of cool people....and are going back in a couple of weeks to do it again...October 20! We have 65 chairs already! It is going to be a good good time. The auction is October 27th in conjunction with the small fall art tour. I can't wait! Hope to see you there...oh and there is still time to donate a decorated chair just bring it into Persimmons!

September 19, 2007 Art & About met at Lauren's place: Petal's Plus, 7014 Center Road. There were 9 members in attendance. Basically we discussed the falltour and chair auction. Please bring in your chairs ASAP. September22nd is the deadline. But just in case you're 'almost' done, likemyself and several others, I'm sure chairs will be accepted beyond thatpoint. So, quit procrastinating! For some of us, that's a little liketelling a ship not to float. Anyway, the event will be at the Rahr-West art museum on October 27th. All proceeds go to the Rahr-West to be given as one or more artscholarships. Our celebrity auctioneer (99% sure) will be Average Joe from WIXX. Ifhe can't make it however, we are hoping that Father Dan would be willingto pitch in. There's just something about a priest gone auctioneer. We still need more items for the silent auction so we are asking anyoneto please donate any artwork that has something to do with a chair-adrawing, or painting for instance such as Van Gogh's Chair with Pipe. To see Van Gogh's famous chair painting go to Google images. The suggested fee or donation at the door will be $5.00 a ticket andanyone donating a chair will receive a complimentary ticket. We wouldalso like to conduct the auction much like any other where bidders willhave a number for bidding et cetera. Note for Kim: Jan Hoyt is the woman to talk to at Roncalli-she handlesthe Pier side Auction and may be able to give us some helpful hints tomake the night go more smoothly. Tim and I will talk with her to seewhat information can be gleaned. I'll get back to you on that.Garnishes is going to donate hors douvers and Stump Jack's will betaking care of coffee (and wine?). The Rahr-West only allows white winebecause of spillage-are they saying artists aren't neat? Also, Pine River Pre-pack will be donating the cheese-can't have winewithout cheese-and someone is going to talk to Van's liquor to see if wecan get either a donation or good price on the wine. Tim W. is going to see if he can recruit a couple of his high schoolstudents to help out that night with basics of clean up et cetera. Ofcourse students cannot serve wine so some of us will need to pitch inwith that kind of thing and any other odd jobs-hopefully we will have abetter handle on exactly what jobs will be needed-more to come. On October 18th, Heather and Kim will be in the spotlight of The NoonShow-which airs at-noon-no doubt. They will talk up the auction andgenerate interest. I don't know-you think those two are 'talkie'enough? Just kidding girls. You go. On October 22nd, Jo and Annette will be picking up the chairs fromvarious locations and bringing them to the Rahr-West Museum. We aremeeting at Persimmons at 10:00 AM if anyone else would like to help-thatwould be great. Also, just a reminder that the charity auction event will be asemi-formal event-black tie not necessary but snappy artistic-wear amust! Jolene had the idea of making table tents for local restaurants-shewill be looking into it for us. So the girls...Kate, Heather, Annette, and Jo came and picked up and delivered the chairs to their temporary homes throughout town. Oh it is so exciting to have them out and about. You can see them at...First National Bank, Chamber of Commerce, Splash, M&I Bank, St Francis of Assisi Parish office, US Bank, Rahr West, The Visitor Center, Maverix, The Mad Hatter, Grape Grain and Bean, Dr Freuds, City Hall, Full Circle Studio, The Dolan Gallery, Stumpjack and Persimmons. We hope to get more and more chairs and will keep an updated list as we do. We really have some great chairs to raise lots of money for the arts in this beautiful community!

August meeting in Heathers beautiful backyard!

We met in the backyard of Heather’s house on 14th street and were greeted by the welcoming reception of Dexter.
Ned has resigned his position as treasurer and Kate Gadd said she was willing to take over the position. A new account will be set up at U.S. Bank. We have approximately $500.00 + in the treasury but owe a good amount to Nelson Sign and Graphics.
We discussed the up and coming chairs for charity auction—we need to move the chairs to various locations to get enthusiasm going for the event. On Monday, August 13th at 1:30 the chairs will be moved to their new locations around the town. If anyone is interested in helping out please stop at Persimmons that afternoon. It shouldn’t take too long. Some of the businesses involved will be The Mad Hatter window, M & I Bank, the Visitor’s Center, Splash, Best Western, et cetera. If anyone has any other ideas—let us know.
Heather said she will make a list and print up a decal for the bottom of all the chairs—her mom will donate the decals—Thanks Mom! Also, we will need tickets printed—Vista Print? We also discussed that anyone donating a chair should get a complimentary ticket—one per chair donated. Tickets should be reasonable this first year to get people to come. We decided on $5.00 a ticket.
We just may have a guest celebrity auctioneer but mums the word on who that could be right now until we get the final ‘okay’. No, I don’t know who it is either—so it would be fruitless to ask.
The auction date still stands as the culmination of the fall tour—the tour will be Friday October 26 and 27, the chair auction will be the 27th at 7:00 at the Rahr-West museum. We will have more on that when plans are finalized. Anyone wishing to be of help on auction night—let us know—in our September meeting we will be discussing what needs to be done the night of the auction. All chairs will be set up at the museum by that week before so people can stop in and see what’s up.
Perhaps we could get some businesses to donate food for the auction—we’re thinking basically chocolate, cheese, coffee, and wine—the four main food groups.
Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 12th at 6:30 at Lauren’s place: Petal’s Plus, 7014 Center Rd.

So I went to Art Vs Craft in Milwaukee yesterday and had so much fun. For those of you who don't know what it is it is a very fun funky show with upcoming designers and indie crafters. It is refreshing to see different stuff out there. Kate Gadd put together a little flyer for Sputnikfest and I talked to a lot of people about it. They were so enthusiastic about the idea for the festival but also the idea for the art fair. The whole festival will have a retro fun and silly feel to it so we thought it would be fun to also have the art fair be the same so here's the idea....

Artta This World.... One side of 8th street will be the indie crafters the other side will be the fine artists. There will be a box on the app. for the artist to decide on their placement in the art or craft side. In the artist packet each artist will receive a few alien type koosh balls and other gear and a war between the two will go on during slow times. It will just be fresh new and fun. I talked to some of the girls at etsy yesterday and they are super excited about it and plan on participating. I go to a lot of fairs throughout the summer and it was so refreshing to see different artists and fun and funky stuff. All of the funky people love the idea I am curious how the fine artists feel about it? Please leave a comment.

June Notes

Hello All... I hope that you have been enjoying the beautiful weather
that we have been having! In Jo's absence (we missed you) at our June
13th meeting in the Persimmons Backyard Wonderland, I have taken the
notes to share with all of you!
Kim mentioned some Farmer's Market dates that may be available for
the promotion of our group and upcoming events...she will forward the
dates when she has them. We were thinking maybe a few people could go
down there and work on their Chairs for Charity or other projects just for
the exposure. If you are interested in giving a Saturday morning to
"our cause"...please let us know after you see the available dates.
We also discussed having a Chair Painting Party to help encourage the
public to decorate some chairs for the event as well as increase the
number of chairs that we have for the auction. Perhaps at the Rahr or a
public park or a backyard??? Any ideas feel free to share them!
Also, we would LOVE to see more chairs donated by our members (hint, hint).
Please be sure that people know that we are now accepting chairs
through September 22nd and that we NEED TONS MORE!!!
There was a quick review and look-back at the Spring Tour and overall
it seemed like it was a success! We are getting better and better at
this!!! Our group has really grown! We are considering changing the
Friday night hours into a Walk-About style or Round-Robin
evening...where members and participating gallery/studio owners would have the
opportunity to go from place to place and check out each others' work. We
also discussed possibly extending Saturday's hours if we eliminate the
public attendance on Friday evening. I also suggested possibly having a
punch card listing the participating studios/galleries and the
attendees could get the card punched or stamped at each location and if they
get them all, they would be entered into a drawing for a gift basket!
This may help to raise the attendance at out-of-the-way locations?! This
idea was well recieved and I think that we are going to give it a try
next tour!
The date for the July meeting is up in the air as of now...the second
Wednesday happens to land on Crazy Day Sales this year and that may
not work for a lot of people...we are thinking about having a very casual
picnic where we all bring something to pass and simply enjoy one
another's company...no business...just fun. We will let you know when this
plan is solidified. The August 8th meeting will be held in my
backyard...more info to follow...We have decided that our summer meetings will
continue to be relaxed and fun...
Finally, we intend to develop a Membership Directory as soon as we
have all of the info gathered...Kate Gadd has offered to take on some new
responsibilities for the group including this project...Thanks Kate!
Other things you should know: Annette showed up for the meeting in
her girlie shirt--there was lots of pink involved and secretly she loves
pink!!! And while Holly ate flies from the air, Miss Molly paraded
around in Kim's cherry shoes...it was all quite enjoyable and
entertaining if I do say so myself!

Just for Kids - Down & Dirty with Clay
Clay Artist / Instructor, Ginny Zipperer, will help you explore the shape and texture of clay in this three session workshop for upper elementary students. You’ll be introduced to basic hand building methods such as coiling, pinching and slab-work as you use your imagination to create 3 dimensional pieces. During the third and last session you’ll add color to your fired clay pieces. Held on Wednesday afternoons in July from 2:00-3:30 pm on the 11th, 18th, and Aug 1st. All materials provided $20 for non members - $15 for members. This workshop is limited to the first 15 registered. If cost is an issue please contact the museum and ask about a scholarship.

Persons in need of special accommodations are invited to contact the museum in advance for assistance. Accommodations will be made as quickly as possible.

So a few chairs have arrived and it is so fun. So far we have 7 chairs. I have had a few frantic phone calls of people telling me they don't have theirs done but no worries! We have extended the deadline to the entire summer. Of course getting your chair done by the deadline which is really May 15th...will ensure placement, where if you get one done later it may not be displayed until a spot is found or we have time to put it out somewhere. So spread the word and keep the chairs coming! Our goal is 100 chairs by auction time! We can do it no problem!

We will be featured in the Herald Times Reporter for the Spring Tour watch for it!

Again if anyone is interested in displaying for the art tour I will let you do that in the backyard no charge just contact Kim at Persimmons.

Art and About met at Stump Jack’s coffee house in Two Rivers land one week later than our usual meeting due to an untimely spring snow storm on the 11th. Those present consisted of Heather, Kim, Bonnie, Annette, Randy, (Randy’s new email: runclemoose@hotmail.com) Amy, Becky, Theresa, newcomer Laurel, and myself.
Laurel owns Petals Plus @ 7014 Center Rd. To find: take I43 to exit 144 one mile to west to Center Road—turn right—first place on the left. Open Wed. – Fri. from 12 – 7 and Sat. 10 – 4. And, according to Heather, she has all sorts of cool, artsy stuff. The phone number for Petals Plus is 758-2232 just incase you’d like to know more.
Jo read the notes from the previous meeting—thank goodness Annette had a copy because our secretary is far from organized.
Our main topic of discussion was the upcoming spring tour. As it stands we have six galleries on the tour this spring: Persimmons, Full Circle, the Dolan Gallery, Stump Jack’s, Gallery East, and Kate Gadd glass. If there is to be a demo at any of the galleries, it would be best to set a specific time so people can see it if they wish. Also, the tour again will be Friday night and Saturday during the day—with demos (if applicable) on Saturday. Heather is open to sponsor a guest artist if someone does not have a gallery to showcase his or her artwork.
Kim has created a blog so people can be informed or keep others informed about Art and About news (or otherwise). To participate / read blogs go to: www.artandabout54220.blogspot.com.
We also discussed the Chairs for Charity event. ANYTIME you have a chair ready you may bring it in to Kim’s shop on north Eighth Street. The actual deadline is May 1st, however, knowing we artists—May 14th may be a more realistic date. Just don’t tell anyone—mum’s the word. Just keep thinking May 1st, May 1st, but chairs will be accepted after that date, just ‘cuz we know better.
A lady from the beautification committee (like there is such a thing) said she was delighted to know about the chair event. It will be a great addition to the downtown areas of Manitowoc and Two Rivers.
We discussed signage—we should have signs that we re-use every year that say ART TOUR HERE or some such thing. We are also going to have a vinyl banner made for the spring tour that the HTR will proudly display for us on their fence line for three weeks. This needs to be done ASAP as our spring tour is coming up.
Heather has also asked Wade Marks to create a cool poster promoting our Chairs for Charity event—that would really spice up the advertising—he does some very cool work.
The auction end of the event will hopefully be held at the Rahr-West art museum although we won’t have official confirmation from them until a new director is named. The money raised will be for art scholarships given to area students who are interested in pursuing the visual arts as a career. We will work through the Service League—they will be handling the paperwork.
We discussed the price per ticket of this formal event—we thought tickets should be $10 - $15 a piece. Any thoughts? And the event would, of course, be open to the public.
We talked about having a business (WG&R perhaps) donate a chair to be raffled off at the auction ‘Best Chair in the House’ kind of thing and perhaps having a silent auction section as well—other 2-D donated artwork—perhaps of chairs?
In other news, we are running low on funds. Perhaps not all monies have been paid in dues and / or we need more paying members. There will be a gallery fee of $40.00 charged for the spring tour but that will help defray those advertising costs et cetera. We also need to address having a better system on how to keep track of paid members and consider other means to boost our general funds. And, we are always looking for new victims, I mean, new members if anyone knows of anyone even sort of interested in joining us—drag them in. We are a fun bunch!
We also discussed whether or not our meetings should have speakers or an actual agenda—what’s an agenda? Yes, having a speaker (one of us perhaps or other artist-like person) to discuss his or her work / experience would be interesting. In the past we have also discussed having a Saturday or Whatever-day work session akin to what we do on the Saturdays of our members’ show. It is always fun to just sit and work on your own art while visiting with fellow artists. You learn all sorts of interesting things.
Lastly, Heather mentioned the 3rd Annual Linda Dworak Memorial Golf Outing on Saturday, August 25th at Branch River Country Club. She is asking for donated artwork for the silent auction portion of the event. Proceeds go to breast cancer research. If you would like to help out—talk to Heather.

Chairs For Charity

Chairs for Charity is a fundraising event being put together by Art and About. Artists will decorate chairs provided by them in many different mediums. The chairs will be revealed on May 18th for the Spring Art Tour in high traffic locations throughout the community. In October for the Fall Art Tour the chairs will be auctioned off with proceeds going to local charitites. We are hoping to hold the auction at The Rahr West art museum but that has yet to be confirmed.

Welcome to the Art and About Information Blog. We will be posting upcoming events, meeting dates and all sorts of colorful things on the blog. Why we haven't thought of this before?????

Our next meeting is on Wednesday April 18th at 6:30pm at hopefully Stumpjack Coffee Co at 1606 Washington Street in Two Rivers. I have to get a hold of them to confirm but I will post any changes.
We will be discussing the upcoming Spring Art Tour and Chairs for Charity being held on Friday May 18 & 19.
